I have a gigabit network (router, switch, gigabit ethernet adaptor pci card) but only reach speeds of 20-30mbs
Could it be my old computer (4 years old) but it is a 3Ghz Pentium 4 with 1GB DDR RAM. ? PCI slot cannot take Gigabit speeds? Why can I not reach speeds greater than 20-30mbs?
Local area network speeds from my desktop to networked hard drive. It takes 120seconds to transfer a 1.5GB file from my desktop (with gigabit network adaptor) to my Gigabit networked hard drive (brand new). Works out at less than 20mbs.
The led lights on the front of the gigabit switch all indicate both the computer & NAS are acting 1000mbs. But the reality is not.
The cable between the switch and NAS is a Cat 5e. Should it be a Cat 6? or should Cat 5e work for Gigabit speeds?
Well, one question, are these LOCAL speeds or INTERNET speeds?
What are you using to measure them?
If its internet speeds, your ISP sets the speed not your local system. (that would be very good internet speeds for ANYONE!)
Most systems are well below 10mbs, in the US 3-4mbs is the average these days.
If its local speeds, whats on the "other end"? That too can be a limiting factor.
So a little more info needed in order to help much.

You need to check the HD's writting speed. Don't forget the transfer you are measuring has to include the writting and verification so what you are seeing is NOT BANDWIDTH at all, its "transaction time" that isn't bandwidth or network transfer speed! If the file has to be written on the other end then and the total transferred is 1.5 then of course the transaction will take longer!
Get a networking tool to check the actual connection speed! It probably is 1000mbs!
Cat 5e should be ok, how long is it, are you crossing any "noise" sources like AC lines etc. Cat 6 will be less subject to noise interference. (it can still get some).
Too see what I mean about the Write times here is a nice article - you probably can't write the file much faster than 20-30mbs with the drive you have installed!
