My web server provides me with an storage path, What is it for? What do I need it for?

Is it for a visitor to my web pages to upload a file or files thru a PHP script? Thank you.

Sort of. This path would tell you where your files that you FTP'ed to the server actually reside. If you are using PHP, and need to use the absolute path of a folder (for example, for including other PHP files) this is the root path that you want to prepend.

For example, let's say you uploaded your web site to / and your "storage path" is /srv/webs/username/

In this example, you also created a folder called includes with all of your classes and you want to include one in your index.php

You can do it like this:
include('/srv/webs/username/includes/class.php');
?>

Of course, you can also use it like this:
include('includes/class.php');
?>

but the second option has to be changed when you want to include the class on other pages in subfolders. Many pre-built programs like phpBB will ask for the server path in their setup.
