Why is server connected to a lan port on router?
I have seen a server config which the server has 2 NIC ports and i port is connected to a lan port of the ruter and the other port to a lan port on the switch so,
router-->server-->switch
i thought it would be
router--->switch---->server
You are correct, that is absolutely wrong. It makes the entire LAN dependant on that server. Even for monitoring purposes there is a better way to do it. Most LAN switches, other than home or home office devices have some kind of monitoring feature. Different manufacturers use different terms like monitoring, spanning, mirroring, etc, but basically you can configure a switch port to receive a “copy” of all date that passes through the switch or a specified vlan.
The only exception would be a device that exist specifically for the purpose of Internet filtering like Websense, Bluecoat, etc. Some (not all) of these systems are designed to run “in-line”.
A WAN acceleration device might also run in-line, but even WAN acceleration can be done through a re-direct, rather than a physical in-line configuration.
