Is there a a PC case for just for internal drives?
I've been looking through all my old stuff and found all kind of drives sitting around. It's a pain going through them all. Is there such a thing as a case that holds only internal drives? Kind of like a server. I thought about maybe deleting them all and having a super computer of sorts
If there is a case like this, what is it called, and where to get one?
Thanks!
Well, that those on New Egg are cool, but they only hold one drive. I mean a case that would hold 5 drives at once.
I haven't ever come across any kind of case that will hold multiple drives that doesn't have any other hardware in it but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Ages ago I started thinking about something that would make life easier for me, mentioned it to a friend and he replied, "They're called KVM switches." So I'd check with any computer shop and they will know.
These are the things I do know of:
--Cases like the one linked to by the first poster.
--Removable hard drive caddies - these are the size of a CD drive and something like a drawer in a case. The case part gets installed in the computer and the hard drive gets put into the drawer and the drawer is slid in when you want the hard drive in the computer. The drawback to these is that you have to turn the computer off to add or remove a hard drive. I've set one of ours up like this with the intention of using each drive (they're only small ones) for a different group of files because they would be in the computer for a while at a time.
--Big computer cases that could take all the hard drives you have. You will also need a motherboard that can have that many drives plugged into it. Some of the motherboards with RAID capabilities will allow you to use the hard drives as separate hard drives rather than RAID drives. (RAID is about "mirroring" one set of hard drives on another set - a method of backing up that allows immediately getting back up and running if one of the main hard drives fails. So if you normally would have 2 hard drives, you have 4 instead and 2 are copies of the other two.)
You can get frames for hard drives (or floppy disk drives) that can be used to put a small 3.5" drive into the place where a 5.25" fits. That could be helpful if you find a case that's *almost* suitable.
You would also need enough plugs on the power supply you used.
--Proper server cases which can take more disks than you own. No problem with fitting the disks in or having enough connectors to the power supply or the motherboard. They tend to be costly so that's why I thought looking into RAID capable motherboards and a large case might be cheaper. And you can also get "double adaptor" connectors so you could plug two hard drives into one plug from the power supply. You MUST make sure the power supply has enough power to run all the hard drives.
