Tipping: buffets, carside/carhop service?
I am not sure how much to tip servers in the following settings:
How much is appropriate to tip in a buffet setting? For instance, if you go to a buffet brunch and all the server does is bring drinks and clear plates but you are responsible for getting your own food at the buffet, what is the correct amount to tip? How about if you have to get your own drinks?
If you get carside service, like at Applebee's or Chili's and the server brings your food to the car, what is the appropriate amount to tip?
If you go to a place like Sonic where the carhop skates out to the car and drops off your food, what is the appropriate amount to tip, if any?
I never know if I am over tipping or not tipping enough...
I say a dollar a person/plate in all instances (or maybe 10% in a buffet setting-- unless I have to get my own drinks, then $1 is quite generous). Why should I tip really well when I am basically serving myself?
My hub says 15% at the brunch, but $1 a person at carside and $1 total at Sonic. But he's more generous than I am.
