Problem with mySQL, can't insert data into database?

I need some review on inserting a row into a table, here's the code
$sql_query = mysql_query("INSERT INTO elements (name, symbol, atom_num, atom_mass, group, period) VALUES ('$name', '$symbol', '$atom_num', '$atom_mass', '$group', '$period')") or die (mysql_error());

and when I submit it it says:
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''group', 'period') VALUES ('Hydrogen', 'H', '1', '1.008', '2', '1')' at line 1

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but apparently I am, could anyone point out what is wrong with it?

I renamed 'group' with 'column' but the same thing happened, and group is a tinyint, and atom_mass is a float int.
When i remove group from the query, it executes fine.

You can still put the `group` entry in the query, but surround the word `group` with the weird apostrophe found by pressing the button next to the number 1. That will tell mysql that it's definitely a field and not a command
